Papers of Charles Henry Thurston, 1850-1986 (bulk 1850-1863).

The collection consists chiefly of letters from Thurston to family members particularly his mother, Diana Moore Gwathmey Thurston. They describe his life as a shipping clerk in Trinity, La., hotel clerk in Natchez, Miss., and soldier with the Louisiana volunteers. Transcripts of a pocket notebook, 1857, from his employment as a river pilot for the firm of Wooldridge and Groves list owners and overseers of places on Bayou Macon and the Tensas River. Civil War entries include lists of camps, battles and killed and wounded. There are also several items pertaining to his death in an 1862 train derailment, a business register, 1854-1857, a brief autobiography, and a genealogy, 1986, tracing his mother's ancestors.

139 items.
